Group movement lab with Evan Johnson

Description

Ever wondered if you could join a larger dance performance without memorizing choreography?

Flocks of birds, schools of fish, swarms of ants—they all moved together through shared rules, not rigid routines. We gathered to explore how humans could do the same.

The lab began with facilitation by Evan Johnson, followed by an open session where participants proposed new rules for the group exploration. Scarves and bandanas added color and motion to the room.

Evan Johnson (he/they), a San Francisco–based cultural producer and theatre maker with over 15 years of experience, created playful, embodied creative spaces rooted in physical theater and collaborative performance. Their work centered connection, care, and collective creativity—inviting participants to explore, express, and build together.

The lab opened with Evan’s facilitation and unfolded into a shared experiment in inventing new movement rules together.
