Artspan Open Studios

Decentered Arts is hosting Artspan Open Studios

The October edition of _Gen Blend_ brought writers and neighbors together for an evening of community, creativity, and shared food at Ruth’s Table. Hosted by Liz Cahill and Jessica Kie McCallum, the event featured readings by **Mary Graves**, **Carl Weiner**, **Daphne Gottlieb**, and **Barbara Handler**, each offering distinct reflections on memory, family, love and personal growth.

After the readings, **Spandan Rath**, a classically trained tabla artist, filled the room with rhythm and warmth, bridging generations through sound before the night transitioned into the open mic. Guests shared original poems and short pieces under the guidance of the Decentered Arts hosts, closing the evening with conversation, snacks, and gratitude.

_Gen Blend_ continues monthly on the first Thursday, nurturing an intergenerational community of writers and listeners in San Francisco’s Mission District. Thriving Together: AI Tools for Creative Community Success

On September 30, 2025, Decentered Arts Studio came alive with creative energy as artists, makers, and entrepreneurs gathered for Thriving Together, an immersive workshop exploring how simple AI tools could transform their creative practices.

Led by creative technologist Lem Canady and educator-performer Joon Kim, the evening wove together art and innovation, showing participants how mobile-first AI tools could automate marketing tasks—writing captions, designing posts, even running ads—so they could focus on what they loved most: creating.

Through hands-on demos and guided practice, attendees discovered how these apps could act as personal marketing teams in their pockets. Conversations sparked about reclaiming time, growing audiences, and building thriving creative communities without needing any tech background.

More than just a tech tutorial, the workshop became a celebration of collaboration and possibility—where artists learned to harness new tools not to replace their creativity, but to amplify it.


Thriving Together: AI Tools for Creative Community Success

Artists and dreamers harnessed pocket-sized AI magic, transforming marketing drudgery into creative freedom and collaborative momentum.


On September 29th, Decentered Studio came alive to celebrate the debut of Jessica Kie McCallum’s poetry collection, _Yang Sayang_. Friends, family, and community members gathered for an evening of art, poetry, and conversation in honor of this landmark publication from Decentered Press.
The evening opened with live music by Nic Hampton—who also designed the book’s striking cover—setting the tone for what followed. A lineup of powerful poetry readings by Connie Lin, Lilly Shi, and Lorrie Change brought their unique voices to the stage before the spotlight shifted to Jess, who shared selections from _Yang Sayang_.
The program continued with a lively Q&A featuring members of the publishing team—Rhea Joseph, Liz Cahill, and Ben Draffin—who discussed the book’s journey to publication. The night closed with a book signing, where attendees had the chance to connect with Jess personally and leave with signed copies of _Yang Sayang_.
Guests dined on Indonesian snacks catered by Dakota (@kamu\_siapa\_kitchen), and Jessica's famous coconut sticky rice Mia Terracotta captured the warmth and beauty of the evening in her lense. The book is available for purchace [here](https://decentered.org/books).

Jessica Kie McCallum's debut poetry book Yang Sayang launched on decentered press. This was also the first solo book published off Decentered Press. 

Join us for the first clothing swap at Decentered Studio. This swap series is called Tectonic Threads because the idea is to unite friends from both sides of The Bay.

How does a clothing swap work? Bring clothing you want to pass on or just bring yourself (it's not required to bring things). Peruse other items people have brought and take as much as you'd like. It's not a 1-1 swap. We always have leftovers.

Q: Do I need to bring clothes?
A: No there are ususaly more than enough.

Q: Is it a 1-1 Swap?
A: Nope, Help Yourself.

Q: What type of clothes will be there?
A: We'd like to have options for all bodies and gender expressions, a good chunk will be femme clothes.

Q: Can I bring items beyond clothing?
A: Accessories, household items, makeup, skincare and anything else you want to gift skew towards nice items. If you bring non-clothing stuff - help us out by taking it back if it doesn't get claimed. We've spent hours of our time rehomeing a bunch of random items post swap - no more!

Decentered Studio Launch Party – September 12, 2025

Decentered Arts unveiled its new gallery and community space in SoMa with a vibrant launch party. Guests explored artwork by Alvar Jacomet, swayed to live music by Tasha Malan, and danced into the night with a DJ set from Maryzelle. The evening marked the beginning of a new creative home for artists and community gatherings in San Francisco.

Guests came dressed in their best "Walk of Shame"
Think: disheveled glam, club top and sweatpants, slip dress and sneakers, messy bun, one earring, sunglasses indoors, flannel over sequins, heels with gym shorts, trench coat over pajamas, yesterday’s makeup, wet hair, hoodie and mini skirt, neon with fur, lingerie as outerwear, suit pants no shirt, oversized blazer and bare legs, socks and sandals, bedhead and smudged eyeliner, crocs with fishnets, morning-after eyes, last night’s outfit reimagined, regret couture, mix & match: satin, flannel, mesh, leather, denim, silk, whatever survived the night

Decentered Arts, together with Ruth's Table, Community Living Campaign, Adobe Books, and Litquake's Elder Project, hosted this inspirational event. It featured writers from the Community Living Campaign Writing Program, the Elder Project workshops, local writers across a wide age range, and community members who joined in. Limited Open Mic time was available for pieces under three minutes.

The gathering was free and potluck-style. Guests brought food to share, beverages were provided, and each month a delectable culinary creation by Amirali Mir was offered as a generous contribution to the potluck.

Visitor guidelines stated that face masks were optional.
Ruth’s Table gallery and the adjacent green space were wheelchair accessible.
ASL interpretation was available upon request with 72-hour notice.

Registration was free and open to all. Donations were welcomed to support the program.

Poolside Poets – July 17

On a warm July evening, the Phoenix Hotel transformed into a dreamy sanctuary of poetry, fashion, music, and movement.

Guests arrived dressed in Retro Romance—red lips, Gatsby glitz, swaying fringe, beaded silhouettes, vintage flair, and sparkle in every detail. Many thrifted, swapped, and upcycled their looks with intention and care.

As the sun dipped below the skyline, the evening unfolded with cocktails and mingling by the pool. A stellar lineup of poets and surprise performers captivated the crowd, with a short intermission for reflection and conversation. Tunes, dancing, and soft connection filled the air.
Tasha Malan serenaded the audience with live music, setting the tone for an unforgettable night.

Featured poets included Rhea Joseph, Juliane Roberts-Hansen, Nicole Rose Schoonbrood, Nes Hafsa, Mary Evans, Izara Achamyalesh, Mariket Mayeno, and Joshua Reyes, with stunning dance performances by Remi Blakesley and Kai Hannigan.

The event was lovingly hosted by Decentered Arts, a nonprofit dedicated to building community through poetry, fashion, and performance. All proceeds directly supported the artists, and no one was turned away for lack of funds.

Retro met radical, and art danced with nostalgia beneath the city lights.

Sweet Beginnings: Poetreats Launch Party

On June 12, a warm and whimsical evening unfolded as friends gathered to celebrate the launch of Poetreats — a dream project by Anna that paired artisanal cookies with audio poetry for a nourishing, multi-sensory experience.

Born from a desire to combine somatic practice with art, food, and joy, Poetreats blossomed over six months into a celebration of mindfulness and community.

Guests arrived to the scent of fresh cookies and the sound of laughter before settling in for poetry readings by Shiv Srivastava, Rhea Joseph, and the event’s first Featured Poet, Savinay Nangalia.

The evening was cozy, heartfelt, and delicious — a true sweet beginning.


Poetreats

Cookies met poetry in a multisensory feast of sweetness, softness, and spirit. Guests savored verses with every bite.

Art Exhibit: The Journey 'Home'
Friday, June 6
7:00pm – 10:00pm

Decentered Arts and Uzay Gallery presented The Journey 'Home', a powerful solo exhibition by Maya (Maryam) Tohidi. Marking the final show at Uzay Gallery before losing its long-held space, the evening served as both a celebration and a farewell.

Tohidi’s work reflected a deeply personal exploration of displacement and belonging—tracing her journey from childhood in Iran, immigration to Canada, the closure of her San Francisco home, and the ongoing search for new roots. Mixed-media works, layered with personal writings, poetry, and objects, combined English and Farsi text with Persian rug motifs—sometimes used to obscure pain, sometimes to reweave new narratives of hope.

Constructed from home-improvement materials and crafted both in-studio and during a residency at Uzay, the pieces embodied labor, transformation, and resilience. They honored cultural tradition while embracing the instability and beauty of evolving identity.

The night was scored by DJ Rev. Hooman, who filled the gallery with mystical sounds—melodic house, deep rhythms, and tribal beats shaped by Middle Eastern and Latin influences.

The event marked both an ending and a beginning: a farewell to Uzay’s physical space, and a symbolic leap toward future definitions of "home."

Rugs wept, memories bloomed—guests wandered through home’s unraveling thread as Rev. Hooman’s mystical beats summoned belonging.

The Decentered Team took a break from city life and retreated to a beautiful property in Guerneville where some friends were throwing a DIY festival.  

Poolside Poets – May 15

On May 15th, Poolside Poets returned to The Phoenix Hotel for another dreamy night of poetry, music, dance, and style. Hosted by Anoah East Wang, Liz Cahill, Decentered Arts, and friends, the evening welcomed guests into a “Dreamscape” of flowing, ethereal looks and dark, visionary fashion. Attendees dressed for a dream—or a nightmare.



The event began with themed cocktails and mocktails as guests mingled, then transitioned into a stellar lineup of poetic performances, including Liz Cahill, Anoah East Wang, Joseph Kidney, Philip Staley, Willy, Zoellen, Emlen Metz, Pasich, Alexandra Kostoulas, Angelica La Marca and Eliza Alma Ramazzini. Musical guests Noah Solt and Xiao Zhang created a lush sonic backdrop, while dancers Remi Blakesley and Erica Knox brought movement to the dream world.

As always, all proceeds supported the artists, in line with Decentered Arts’ mission to uplift community creativity.

Poets bloomed in dream world glam—guests floated in chiffon, nightmares, and neon while dancers and soundscapes dissolved the Phoenix into fantasy.


"Hand Jobs" – Megan Mackey Art Exhibition

On May 9th, 2025, artist Megan Mackey hosted \*Hand Jobs\*, an anti-pretentious art exhibition dedicated entirely to the body part we see the most: hands.

Held in celebration of Mackey’s birthday, the evening invited guests to revel in playful surrealism, cheeky wordplay, and perhaps a bit of **subLIMBinal** messaging. True to her Dadaist ethos, Mackey refused to explain her pieces, urging viewers to **_finger it out_** for themselves.

The exhibition featured works that danced between the absurd and the sensual—some NSFW—making it a night for adult eyes only. Attendees mingled over drinks and food, their presence and donations fueling the night’s festivities.

This celebration of surreal, self-aware art was made possible with support from Decentered Arts, building community through art in all forms.

Guests fingered their way through surreal, sultry hand art—cheeky, NSFW, and defiantly Dada—at Megan Mackey’s irreverent birthday bash.

J.EHREN FASHION SHOW
 Saturday, April 26
 6:30pm – 10:00pm PT
On a sultry spring night at the Phoenix Hotel, fashion designer Joey Ehren (j.ehren) unveiled a bold, immersive runway experience—where dreams met silver hardware, corset lacing, and upcycled futurism. The show pulsed with energy as models strutted through a world built from Natalia Stardust’s creative direction and Kelsie Jones’s striking runway design.
After the runway dazzled, DJs billlyd123 and femme.natale took over, turning the space into a confident, clubby afterglow.
The production was led by a powerhouse team, including MUA Torrey Bernal, Paul Reginato, and Liz Cahill, all in collaboration with Decentered Arts.
Confidence was the only dress code—and guests delivered.

Gleaming eyelets, corseted chaos, and post-apocalyptic glamour—guests SLAYED in upcycled powerwear at j.ehren’s dream-drenched runway rave.

Poolside Poets – April 17

On Thursday, April 17, the Phoenix Hotel bloomed with poetry, music, dance, and vibrant fashion at another unforgettable Poolside Poets night. Brought to life by Rhea Joseph, Liz Cahill, Decentered Arts, and friends, the event embraced a Superbloom theme—guests arrived draped in bold florals, desert wildflower palettes, and creative botanical-inspired makeup.

The evening began with themed cocktails and mocktails, followed by a powerful lineup of poets, dancers, and musicians. Performances by King Isis, Lucía Arrocha, Malcolm Squire, and others captivated a packed lounge, while dancers Remi Blakesley and Noga Alpert brought movement to the celebration.

As the show ended, the energy spilled into mingling and music, closing out a night where creativity bloomed and community thrived.

Botanical babes bloomed in wild florals while poets, dancers, and musicians turned the Phoenix Hotel into a springtime fever dream.


Hah Couture Dress Up Party
 Friday, April 11
 7:00pm – 11:00pm PT
Friends gathered at Uzay Gallery to celebrate Hah Holton’s return to San Francisco—just in time for her birthday. The evening featured a trunk show of her iconic wearable art, a Champagne toast, and a sweet spread of strawberries. Guests dressed to the nines in playful fits, honoring Hah’s bold, painterly style.
The $10 NOTAFLOF cover flowed freely into endless bubbly, with remaining funds donated to Junior High LA in support of community programming and fire relief.
It was a night of celebration, art, and sparkle—true to Hah’s colorful, creative spirit.

Decentered Writers Group Anthology #1 Launch – Feb 13
On February 13, Decentered Arts celebrated the launch of its first book, _Writers Group Anthology Vol. 1_, with an intimate gathering at Page Street, generously hosted by Janis Newman. The evening featured reflections on the bookmaking process, an editors' talk, and powerful performances by several featured writers.
The night also marked the release of _Voices of Western Wind_, a spoken word album born from Decentered’s weekly writers group. Attendees mingled, shared inspiration, and picked up copies of the anthology, adorned with cover art by Cole Skaggs (@SuperxFancy). The event highlighted Decentered Arts’ mission to build community through multi-disciplinary creative expression.

We are also endeavoring to publish a "coffee table" style photobook of poets who want to participate. This artifact is meant to highlight poets in the Bay Area now Our Generation. You can sign up to be a part of this now or day of. We intend to publish Creative Commons style so everything can be used elsewhere without our permission.


Poet Headshots

J.EHREN x Piles of SF: A Garbage Age Runway (GA)** **took place on January 25 at MAG Galleries, closing out the _Art and Fashion in the Garbage Age_ exhibit with a bold statement—runway fashion made entirely from San Francisco street trash.
The evening featured two runway walks of the same set of looks, crafted by designer J.EHREN and presented by Piles Collective. Guests gathered outside the gallery on 18th Street for the general admission standing show, while a select few experienced an immersive, seated view inside.
Live music by Taiwanese-American artist Roziht filled the space between shows, adding a moody, textural layer to the night. As a multi-instrumentalist and improviser, her performance amplified the experimental, boundary-pushing energy of the event.
Donations supported the artists, and the evening served as a celebration of repurposing, creativity, and street-born couture in the heart of San Francisco.

Trash turned couture on the catwalk! Guests watched runway looks made from SF street garbage strut with glam, grit, and guts.

Poolside Poets – January Edition (1/16)
 On a rainy January evening, guests gathered in the cozy glow of the Phoenix Hotel’s Be Amazing Lounge for _Poolside Poets_, an evocative night of live poetry, music, dance, and visual art. Curated by Rhea Joseph, Liz Cahill, Drew Sage, and Decentered Arts, the event embraced the theme _“Darkness lifts softly,”_ with attendees donning lacy, floor-length, tactile ensembles that nodded to the avant-garde vision of designer @j.ehren.
Illustrator Jen Spectacular and @j.ehren hosted pop-up booths, offering handmade creations and wearable art. The night unfolded with performances by Animal Prince, Liz Cahill, Drew Sage, Rhea Joseph, and a powerful lineup of local poets and dancers, each bringing light and vulnerability to the new year’s darkness. The evening closed with mingling, music, and reflection on a night rooted in softness, strength, and community care.

The Garbage Age Fashion and Art opening reception took place on January 3 at MAG Galleries, launching a month-long exploration of beauty in waste. Presented by Piles Collective and MAG, the exhibit showcased garments, jewelry, sculptures, and furniture crafted from San Francisco street trash, alongside haunting still life photographs of discarded objects.

Artists Juliane Roberts Hansen, Joey Ehrenberg, Liz Cahill, Paul Reginato, Kelsie Jones, and Edie Trautwein reimagined urban debris into elegance, joined by contributions from Amieliana Rivero and Samantha Alexa. Paula Karolak accompanied the evening with a live viola performance.

The exhibit was followed by a series of community-focused events, including artist talks, upcycled textile workshops, and a runway show celebrating sustainable fashion.

Poolside Poets - 11/21
 On November 21, guests gathered indoors at the Phoenix Hotel’s Be Amazing lounge for a warm, rain-proof edition of _Poolside Poets_. Organized by Rhea Joseph, Liz Cahill, Noam Samuel, and Decentered Arts, the evening featured live poetry, music, and dance celebrating nature under the theme _Be a Tree_.
Attendees arrived in whimsical, tree-inspired outfits, drawing from thrifted and upcycled pieces that turned the space into a forest of creativity. The event included live performances by King David, Zoe Williams, Sara Saavedra, and others, as well as pop-up booths from designer J. Ehren and artist Cole Skaggs.
From nature spirits to spoken word, the night bloomed with grounded joy and rooted expression.

LitCrawl - A Walk Through San Francisco

Softly, Sincerely took place on October 25th at Uzay Gallery—an intimate evening of art, music, and reflection featuring emerging artist Nic Elisa Hampton, with support from Decentered Arts.

The event showcased Hampton’s selected works and wearables, offered for viewing and purchase. The night included a heartfelt performance and an artist talk, where Hampton shared their creative philosophy: transforming anxiety and grief into color, line, and movement. They described their process as deeply embodied—posing like the figures they paint to channel emotion through physicality.

Guests mingled over small bites and drinks, surrounded by a warm, emotionally resonant atmosphere. Attendees were encouraged to wear outfits their younger selves would have admired—an expression of confidence, nostalgia, and self-love.

Guests dressed like their childhood heroes' dreams, basking in art, softness, and sincerity at a night of healing expression.

Poolside Poets celebrated its one-year anniversary on October 3rd with an unforgettable evening of poetry, music, and dance at the historic Phoenix Hotel. Organized by Decentered Arts alongside Rhea Joseph, Liz Cahill, and friends, the event featured a dazzling lineup of performers, including live music by Cardboard People and an electric closing set by DJ ThornberrE at the Be Amazing Lounge afterparty.

Guests arrived dressed in “Sunset to Sunrise” looks—glowing in warm, radiant tones that lit up the night. The evening began with themed cocktails, followed by poetic performances and surprise acts that captured the community spirit Poolside Poets is known for. Dancer Gabby Wei brought visual magic to the celebration, while the lineup of local poets—Papi Grande, Jason Bayani, Giovanna Lomanto, and others—kept the energy flowing.

All proceeds supported the performers, reinforcing the event’s DIY roots and Decentered Arts' ongoing commitment to accessible, artist-led gatherings in the Bay Area.

Poolside Poets – September 12
On a dreamy September evening, the historic Phoenix Hotel transformed into a whimsical Wonderland Tea Party. Presented by Decentered Arts alongside Rhea Joseph, Jess McCallum, Liz Cahill, and friends, the night celebrated poetry, live music, and dance in true psychedelic tea party fashion. Guests arrived in demure and fantastical fits—decked in fancy hats, flowing fabrics, and hints of madness borrowed from festival wardrobes.

The evening began with themed cocktails and mocktails before unfolding into a vibrant showcase of poetry and surprise performances. Breezy, the featured musician, created a soulful sonic backdrop, while local poets and performers including Rhea Joseph, Jessica McCallum, Andrew Paul Nelson, Tureeda Mikell, Lorrie Change, Jorell, Connie Lin, Grace Chao, Kevin Madrigal Galindo, and Zara Jamshed brought magic to the mic.

The night ended with music, mingling, and wonder—an ode to community creativity where no one was turned away for lack of funds, and every word rippled through the poolside air.

On August 22, 2024, Poolside Poets brought a magical night of live poetry, music, and dance to the historic Phoenix Hotel. Presented by Decentered Arts alongside Liz Cahill, Kelley Cape, and friends, the evening unfolded under the whimsical theme “Fairies in the Woods,” with guests arriving in thrifted wings, forest glam, and glittering woodland looks inspired by Sass N Harmony's music.

The event opened with themed cocktails and mocktails, setting the tone for an enchanting lineup of poets and surprise performers. From 7:00 to 9:00pm, voices rang out across the pool deck—featuring Sass N Harmony as musical guests, with powerful readings and performances by Liz Cahill, Kelley Cape, Cassandra Dallet, Jennifer Lewis, Drew Sage, Mia Cristin, Jaron Smith, Yates Cessna, Jake Rabeck, and James Morehead.

After the show, attendees mingled under the stars, sharing tunes, laughter, and the lingering spell of art and community. All proceeds supported local performers, with additional donations helping sustain Decentered Arts' creative mission.

Gen Blend: July 2024

Uzay Gallery opened its doors to the dreamscape world of Oliver Thompson (Olly) for an enchanting evening of art, music, and community, with Decentered Arts as a key collaborator.
Olly, a dreamscape impressionist painter from Turlock and member of the Artists Guild of San Francisco, presented a vivid collection of works that adorned the gallery walls throughout late June and July. His paintings—already found in collections around the globe—transformed the space into a midsummer reverie.
The evening featured a live set by Romzoni, a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and beatmaker. He flowed between DJ sets, live instrumentation, and collaborations with guest musicians, celebrating the release of his album _“…and the Friends We Made Along the Way.”_
Guests mingled over small bites and libations, dressed in their interpretations of “midsummer dreams,” turning the gallery into a vibrant tapestry of color, music, and imagination. The event embodied the spirit of DIY art culture in the Bay Area—intimate, playful, and rooted in community.

Dreamy midsummer fits met surrealist brushstrokes as guests sipped wine, vibed to beats, and wandered through Olly’s painted dreamworld.

It's mental health awareness month, so the special edition of Poolside Poets will be all about Big Feels. Join us for an evening of inspiring poetry, live music, and dance performances at the historic Phoenix Hotel. Brought to you by Decentered Arts, Rhea Joseph, Alex Miller, Liz Cahill, and friends.

Join Hotspot Creatives & Decentered Arts for our Poetry Workshop, featuring speakers, a Q&A panel, interactive activities, spoken word performances, a raffle prize of a free hotel stay and gift basket provided by Hotel Emblem, food and drinks, and more. April is National Poetry month, this is the perfect way to close the month by writing some poems, learning, and making friends. All experience levels welcome, this event is designed to be engaging for beginners and experienced poets. Be sure to bring along a pen and notebook📝

Venue: The event will be hosted at Uzay Gallery, a private loft in the Mission District. Note the space is not wheelchair accessible and has a small dog.

Dress Code: Metallics - glint gold or silver, DIY some tin-foil folly, or go for rusty iron steam punk, layer chains or mixed metals. This is a space to go all out, but be sure to work with your existing wardrobe, borrow, thrift, upcycle.


Doors 6:30 - 7:30 - come hang and get situated with a themed cocktial/mocktial.

j.ehren x Piles of San Francisco returns for a sunset show of fashion and photography at Battery Godfrey, followed by an after party at a private warehome in Balboa Park.

Garments are made from upcycled clothes found dumped on the streets of The Mission and deadstock fabric sourced locally.

This is a renegade event. We will gather at Battery Godfrey in the Presidio. BYOB and BYO Picnic and blankets. It will be 50 degrees and windy 12-14mph winds dress warmer than you think you need to dress.

What is cunty, you may ask? For starters, cunt was a vulgar term historically used to tear down women, but recently has been reclaimed by gen z and any other daring individuals looking for a specific way to identify their style and self. To be cunt is to be bitchy, bratty, and everything iconic. Other icons in the cunt category would be Julia Fox, Britney Spears and that girl Suki from Fast and Furious.

Joey Ehren (j.ehren) is a San Francisco-based fashion designer exploring utilitarian cut and sew methods. Their work frequently uses eyelets, silver embellishments, and corset-style lacing with up-cycled materials. @j.ehren

Your Friends' Basement Theater Company returned with a thrilling double feature: two one-act dramatic plays by the brilliant playwright Emily Elyse Everett. Guests gathered for a night of terror, heartbreak, and intense drama at Uzay Gallery—grateful for the event space, though forever basement people at heart.

The performances began promptly at 7:30pm, with doors opening at 7:00pm. The evening featured two shows, each around 30 minutes, with a brief transition between them, totaling about 65 minutes.

Nightmaretime

Becoming the Truth

Cast: Andre Hessini, Chloe Coultrip, Emily Miller, Grant Bremer, Natalie Lista, Sara Saavedra, and Theory Song

The plays bravely explored intense themes, including obsessive-compulsive thinking, disordered eating, psychological abuse, suicidal thoughts, psychiatric hospitalization, surgical violence, and sexual activity, with an emotional tone similar to a PG-13 experience.


Becoming the Truth and Nightmaretime

Two raw one-acts unleashed terror and heartbreak; guests braved the basement spirit in bold, bruised hearts and wild minds.

Kian Locke, in collaboration with Gizma Music, Decentered Arts, ArtFuseSF, and 2051 Third Space, presented a mythic, psychedelic, and poetic celebration for UNESCO World Poetry Day. The event marked the completion of a large-scale poetry mural created with Ace Dynamic Aesthetics and Genuine Hands Painting.
The evening opened with a vibrant poetry lineup featuring local Bay Area voices, including C. Marcus Scott, Charlie Getter, and Papí Grande. Liz Cahill and Rhea Joseph of Decentered Arts hosted a spirited open mic, welcoming voices from across the community.
As the night unfolded, words met rhythm in ecstatic union, and the talented Kanaaiya closed the night with a mesmerizing live set, ending the celebration on a sonic high.


Rhymes in Rythm with Kian Locke

Poets howled, beats dropped, and mural magic unveiled—guests rhymed in rhythm, basking in cosmic soundscapes and painted prophecy.

**Dress Code:** Guests embodied either the sun or the moon in their fits—accessories, makeup, and bold energy inspired by the stars. ☀️🌌🌕
**Doors** opened from 6:30 to 7:00 as attendees settled in with themed cocktails and mocktails.
**Showtime** ran from 7:00 to 9:00, featuring a rockstar lineup of poets and surprise guests.
After 9:00, the crowd mingled and vibed to tunes.

Celestial glam and cosmic vibes! Poets, dancers, and dreamers lit up the Phoenix—guests dressed as radiant suns or moody moons. 🌕✨

Guests gathered for an evening of art, music, and relaxed elegance at Uzay Gallery. Works by Cole Skaggs (@superxfancy) were on display and available for purchase. Cole gave an artist talk, a painting demo, and hosted an arts & crafts table for attendees to create their own pieces.
Maryzelle (<https://www.maryzelle.com/>), a genre-spanning musician, crafted a unique soundscape for the evening. Known for melodic sound baths, juicy club beats, and punk drumming, Maryzelle set the tone for the night.
Anoah Wang (Zen and Tea) hosted an intimate tea lounge experience.
Indoor plants by Talia (@littleleafdesign\_sf) were showcased and available for purchase.
Small bites and libations were provided by twinkitchen.
Ticket proceeds supported the artists and event logistics—making DIY events in the Bay Area possible.

Had you heard of strange-tundra?

Strange-tundra was a genre, mode, and methodology of writing music that sampled the sounds of ice, wind, choir, and vocals to create an atmospheric, experimental, meditational sound.

In simpler words, it was ice music.

At this SoundBath, we played only strange-tundra. Written by Ice-Composer Xxhe, guests emerged in our Ice Cave under the soothe-sounds of gently cracking ice, soft winds, distant choir, and ethereal vocals.

A professional vocalist as well, Xxhe’s voice vibrated the air above as attendees drifted with eyes closed into conscious stillness.

At HOX, our soundbaths were the most unique in the Bay.

Much like a sensory deprivation tank, the ground shook beneath as participants floated through the thrawls of a wakeful sleep—recharging and resetting their bodies. It was perfectly fine to fall asleep.

Roziht Eve is a Taiwanese American artist based in San Francisco. She is a multi-instrumentalist, improv enthusiast, vocalist, media composer, music producer, session musician, and music educator. Recently, she completed her master's degree in Technology Applied Composition at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Roziht is an active performing artist in the Bay Area. She was a performer and composer for the Auerglass Organ Program at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, where the Auerglass organ, created by Tauba Auerbach and musician Cameron Mesirow, took center stage. She also participated as one of the performers in Marcos Balter's "Pan" at the San Francisco Symphony's SoundBox. Her most recent performances were at Gray Area , the San Francisco Electronic Festival 2023 , and Robot Heart Residency 2023.

She enjoys her explorations of genre-bending compositions and improvisation influenced by sacred chants, Bach, Chopin nocturnes, Debussy, jazz, Enya, and EDM.

Catacombs III: Experimental Tundric Ice Opera
Saturday, Jan 20
7:00pm – 11:00pm PT

It was very likely the most bizarre experience attendees had all year.

Guests stepped into an alien temple surrounded by chunks of ice, a reflective tin foil guitarist, ice dance music DJs, extraterrestrial art, and a short, experimental, interpretive modern dance opera.

The entire venue was transformed into an immersive ice cave installation.

Attendees arrived dressed as plausibly theoretical aliens to experience space templic paintings, chunk ice sculptures, and otherworldly soundscape music.

Made by artists for artists, Catacombs was a cold dip into the tundric, extraterrestrial world of Nenom—a frozen, iceic planet and the setting for Anethemas, a strange-tundra opera and large-scale otherworldly art piece created by Xxhe. At Catacombs, guests were showered in the sounds of Anethemas, surrounded by ethereal dance, auroric light creatures, frozen sculptures, and trancing wind art. Garb was a key part of the experience—and guests found out why.

Decentered Arts was a Key Collaborator of this event.


Catacombs III: Experimental Tundric Ice Opera

Frozen divas, alien dreamers, and tundric sound wizards gathered in an ice cave—Catacombs was Nenom's glittering extraterrestrial opera rave.

The Napkin Poetry Review hosted an afternoon of poetry, refreshments, and connection.

Communities were nurtured by the time taken to come together, and poetry, as a tool for reflection and expression, helped make that possible.

Alongside readings by featured performers—including Taylor Beidler, Giovanna Lomanto, Heather June Gibbons, Liz Cahill, and Napkin co-founder Caroline King—the event celebrated the gallery’s legacy with a reading of Robert Duncan’s work.

Throughout the gathering, and with ticket purchase, donations were accepted for the San Francisco Women’s Building, an organization that advocates for self-determination, gender equality, and social justice. Suggested donations began at $10.

The dress code was business casual or whatever helped guests feel their best. Drinks and snacks were enjoyed throughout.
