Hey Songcfrafters!

This month’s workshop picks up where we left off with Production 101: EQ & Compression. This time we’re starting with a pre-recorded track and taking it a step further in the production process by making the first mix.

Join CJ to see how a mixing engineer takes a raw recorded session, organizes, and polishes it into an exported mp3.

We’ll sit with a digital audio workstation (DAW) displayed on a projector with precision studio monitors to reference subtle audible changes made live.

The class is free. The format is facilitated learning so feel free to voice questions as they arise. No personal gear required. RSVP to reserve a seat.

For the August Songwriter group workshop, we’re featuring a collaborative, interactive discussion about lyric writing and process! We’ll look at storytelling and literary devices used in today’s popular music and write some lyrics of our own with guided prompts and thought starters.

Songwriters Group SongShare

On a Monday evening at Decentered Studio, the Songwriters Group gathered for a hands-on workshop exploring the art of shaping sound.

Led by CJ, the session introduced participants to the fundamentals of audio equalization (EQ) and compression through live demonstrations and real song examples. As tracks evolved in real time, the group discovered how subtle adjustments could transform individual recordings into balanced, cohesive mixes.

The workshop also explored the creative use of sound effects, showing how thoughtful sound design can deepen the character and atmosphere of a recording. Projected demonstrations allowed everyone to hear each change as it happened, making the technical process approachable for songwriters of every experience level.

By the end of the evening, participants left with a stronger understanding of the tools behind music production and new ways of listening to the songs they create.

On an afternoon at Decentered Studio, the community gathered to celebrate original music and creative expression through a live showcase of local songwriters.

One by one, artists took the stage, sharing songs shaped by personal stories, experimentation, and craft. The lineup featured performances by Anoah Wang, Katie, Liliko, Rishi, Christian Wagner, Okvlt no1z3, Alex Santana, and Alexinwaves, each bringing their own voice and musical perspective to the room.

Between melodies and moments of connection, special guest Lorrie Chang offered poetry that added another layer of reflection and storytelling to the afternoon.

Together, the performances created an intimate gathering where music and poetry intertwined, celebrating the creativity, and community that continue to thrive at Decentered Studio.

On the evening of April 23, 2026, Decentered Arts opened the doors of Decentered Arts Studio for Art Party with Super Extra Fancy as part of SOMA Nights.

The studio filled with the easy rhythm of a neighborhood night out-people drifting in from the block party, conversations spilling between small businesses, and the energy of SOMA alive with creativity and connection. Inside, artist Cole Phoenix Skaggs transformed the space through live painting, turning the evening itself into part of the artwork.

Known for a lifelong devotion to drawing-with more than 7,000 works and counting -Cole brought their signature world of intricate ink lines, natural patterns, and organic textures into motion. Inspired by landscapes, trees, water, wood, and the quiet repetition of forms in nature, their process invited guests to witness art as something unfolding in real time.

Alongside the painting, CJ carried the night with music, setting the atmosphere with sound that moved gently through the studio and out into the street. Together, image and rhythm created a space that felt both intimate and alive.

As neighbors wandered through and paused to stay awhile, the evening became more than an art show-it became a shared moment of presence, a reminder that creativity can be both spontaneous and communal.

For one Thursday night during SOMA Nights, Decentered Studio became a place to gather, listen, watch, and celebrate the beauty of making something together.

Songwriters Group Anniversary Party

Songwriters Group marked its one-year anniversary with a stellar lineup of live performances, plus drinks, snacks, and community celebration.

On New Year’s Eve, Decentered Studio transformed into a glowing, two-floor house party as Decentered Arts joined forces with Basil House and Gather SF to welcome 2026 together.

Guests arrived wrapped in Celestial Coze—metallics, sequins, velvet, faux fur, and cosmic shimmer—stepping into a shoes-off world that felt ethereal, warm, and ready to dance all night. Inside, three stages pulsed with live music and spontaneous jams, while a tea lounge offered calm, a squish zone invited cozy connection, and surrealist art pulled people into dreamy corners of the space.

Across the night, sets unfolded from Hugo de la Lune, Oakadelic, Jin Lee Baobei, CJ, Roziht Eve, Elijah Malik, Sincerely Nic, and Black Hole Harvest, with musicians jumping in and out as the energy shifted. Bubbly flowed at midnight, light snacks circulated, and BYOB bottles were shared among friends old and new.

Entry closed at 1am, but the celebration carried on until 4—an intimate, joyful house party built on community, music, and collective care, with ticket sales supporting the artists and the magic that made the night possible.
